The Potty Frog
December 9, 2008
The Saint Cloud Zern family lives in the semi-tropics. That means we live halfway from the sweatiest part of the planet and halfway from the land of the four seasons. People often speak of “the four seasons”—in hushed and reverent tones. I believe these people to be crazy. I believe that in the land of “the four seasons” or as I like to think of it, the land without good common sense, there is the hot season, also known as the—don’t breathe the air season, because it’s a red ozone day and the air is poison. This is sometimes called summer. Then there is fall, which is attractive for three or less days. We call winter the time of the Tim Burton movie set, because it’s all dead, dead, dead . . . forever. Spring is the time for fools. It’s spring! Oops, it snowed in April. Fooled you! In Florida there are two seasons—hot and hotter, also a touch of sweater weather and the season of, “Are there frogs in the toilet again?” We are in the “frogs in the toilet again” season. Here, in the semi-tropics, life abounds, and a lot of the time life abounds in our toilet. Some how, some way, gigantic tree frogs crawl, swim, climb, spelunk, or sneak their way into our guest bathroom toilet. When I say gigantic, I mean think of a medium sized pork chop with sucker feet. Once in the toilet, these undocumented amphibians paddle about in lazy amphibian circles until someone, usually without their pants on, “discovers” them. Screaming is involved—sometimes shrieking. Giant bullfrogs swimming in the guest bathroom potty are not as pretty as the foliage on a crisp October day in North Carolina, but they are a ton more exciting, and it’s a conversation starter like no other. “How do you get the bullfrogs out of your potty? Butterfly net or spatula?” Linda (Got Frogs?) Zern
